Our Junior High Robotics Team is heading to Grand Forks tomorrow, Saturday, March 1st, to compete in the State Robotics Competition! Only 20 teams in the state qualified, and our team has been working overtime to get ready for the challenge! 💪🔥
The competition gets tougher every year, and our Hi-Liners are ready to bring their best! If you can’t make it in person, you can watch the action live on YouTube under South Middle School Robotics.

During our school board meeting, we took a trip to the robotics department to highlight the amazing achievements of our students and coaches!

Students shared insights into speech, coding, engineering, and all the elements that make up a robotics competition. They also gave a hands-on demonstration for the school board and parents, showcasing the incredible work they do!

📝 2025 Barnes County Spelling Bee Results! 🏆
The 2025 Barnes County Spelling Bee took place on Monday, February 3, at 1 PM in the Hi-Liner Activity Center, featuring top spellers from grades 5-8 across Barnes County.
Students from Barnes County North, Maple Valley, St. Catherine’s, Washington Elementary, and Valley City Junior High competed in three challenging rounds: written, vocabulary, and oral.
🏅 Barnes County Spelling Bee Champion: Theresa Peterson (Maple Valley)
🥈 Runner-Up: John Oakland (Valley City Junior High)
Both will represent Barnes County at the State Spelling Bee at the Bismarck Event Center on March 17!

🤖 Valley City Robotics Dominates the Red River Valley Tournament! 🏆
Valley City VEX IQ Robotics competed against 60 teams at the Red River Valley VEX IQ Robotics Tournament on Saturday—and what a performance!
The Teamwork Challenge finals were intense, with the score to beat set at 49 points early on. Teams 58072D Battle Bots and 58072J Organized Chaos gave their all, but it was the top-ranked teams, 58072B Robo-Ducks and 94605A MaxIQ, who stole the show with an incredible 82 points—the highest teamwork score of the season! 🎉
🏅 Teamwork Challenge Award: Robo-Ducks
📓 Design Award: Organized Chaos, recognized for their exceptional Engineering Design Journal and interviewing skills
Next up, teams head to Grand Forks on Friday, January 31, for their final regular season tournament before State.
